Ancient Biblical Symbols: Water

The symbols and syntax around ‘water’ and ‘waters’ in Genesis and including the other books of the Old Testament King James Version Bible is a foundation of the creation account.
Below I have endevoured to pull as many mentions and quotes from the book, and present them here.

Genesis Chapter 1 – Creation

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. -Genesis 1:2

When “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters,” Life from the Light called God moved down into the central sphere of what was to become heaven and earth, but was one at the time.

As all life needs water, it too was a symbol of life—both physical life and spiritual life. All life is water and light.

Water, in the Bible, is a symbol for life; the celestial invisibles have spiritual water, and all terrestrial life depends on H2O.
The waters of heaven and earth are the worlds of the hosts of heaven and humankind of the cosmos.

And he said to me, The waters which you saw…are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
Revelations 17:15

The spirits and the waters of heaven were the first to be created while the deepest part of God remained dark and empty.

The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire…he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings and discomfited them. Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered….
Psalms 18:13-15

“the channels of waters” here are in reference to creation of the cosmos – the big bang.

Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the LORD…Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
Psalms 114:7-8

(When light struck into the universe and divided the darkness, rock was the first solid that was formed.)

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure…?
Isaiah 40:12

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters….
Revelation 19:6

The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders: the LORD is upon many waters.
Psalms 29:3

It is evident that the properties of liquid water have been designed expressly to accommodate life. We live on a watery planet (70.8% water), we live in a body that is mostly water, and all life depends on water for survival. There can be no better symbol of life.

…and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters….
Revelation 14:7

…the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.
Isaiah 42:10

According to the King James Bible, there are many watery planets like ours, more than can be numbered—like the “sand of the sea.”

The Scriptures sometimes refer to the empty spaces of the cosmos as the sea and the many waters are sometimes described as the isles of the sea or as the fountains of waters.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. -Genesis 1:6

During the first day of the eons after the Spirit of Life had moved over the central sphere of God, the waters of the invisibles came into existence.

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

God divided the waters under the firmament from the waters above the firmament because the waters above were of a different form of energy than the waters below. He made the waters above, “his throne” and he called it Heaven, and the waters below he called Earth.

He holds back the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud upon it. He has compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
Job 26:9-10

The day and night: the expansion and contraction of the cosmos.

After the second day of time when the heaven of heavens was established and divided from the depth by a firmament of light, there is no more said about heaven in the creation story.
From that point on, Genesis concentrates on earth in general and our world in particular.

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:9-10

°°°

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made…He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap: he lays up the depth in storehouses.
Psalms 33:6-7

Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place: The terrestrial waters in the universe, as did all matter, started out in one spot and “he sent his arrows, and scattered them.
The heavens were in the early stages of evolving and developing atmospheres around the cooling rocks and they were still “gathered together unto one place.”

AN EXPANDING COSMOS…

To him that stretched out the earth above the waters….
Psalms 136:6

Who laid the foundations of the earth…You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At your rebuke they fled; at the voice of your thunder they hastened away. They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto a place which you have founded for them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.
Psalms 104:5-9

The cosmos was expanding. The waterlogged rocks, along with the immature bodies of fire, gases and lightning, were small, oddly shaped, and close together.

Those planets would have been the first of the many waters to evolve: the first and the oldest civilizations, and by far the most advanced. They would be eons ahead of us, and most of them would still be out there somewhere, deep in the middle of the expanding cosmos.

He sends forth his commandment upon earth: his word runs very swiftly. He gives snow like wool; he scatters the hoarfrost like ashes. He casts forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold? He sends out his word, and melts them: he causes his wind to blow, and the waters to flow.
Psalms 147:15-18

Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who has gendered it? The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
Job 38:29-30

The stars were evolving, and some had become life-nourishing suns to the family of planets. The cosmos was now rapidly expanding, as flaming bodies of matter were being flung out into the darkness. The many waters and their suns, moons and companion dry planets became engulfed within the seas of galaxies and were driven farther and farther away from each other.

The Evolution of Life in the Water – Genesis Chapter 5

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
Genesis 1:20-23

The Evolution of Life in the Water

“Let the waters bring forth….” means that all of the waters in the cosmos brought forth the moving creature. And it also means that from the water comes “the moving creature that has life.”

All earthly life came from the water, just as the unborn slumbers in its embryonic microcosm of water.

The LORD looks from heaven; and beholds all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looks upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashioned their hearts alike; he considers all their works.
Psalms 33:13-15

Evolution was similar throughout the many waters. Some of those planets may be ahead of us by millions of years, and there may be worlds that are less advanced than we are, but time and distance are nothing in the grand scheme of creation. All of the many waters would still be within the range of the six days of “Let there be…and there was…and God saw that it was good.”

Life Began in the Water

When the first creatures were born of the water on our planet there was only one ocean and one mass of land named Pangaea. Scientists have theorized that life began in the water more than 600 million years ago during the Pre-Cambrian period. In the Bible it was known as the fifth day.

Just as there was giant plant life in the water and on land when our planet was very young, from the waters of our oceans there came to be huge creatures.

O LORD, how manifold are your works…So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts…there is the leviathan, whom you have made to play therein…You give them their meat in due season…You hide their face…you take away their breath, they die, and return to their dust…You send forth your spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth.
Psalms 104:24-30
